Saving Christmas

on .

This year, I was blessed to be able to give back in a unique way.  I presented a show called "Saving Christmas."  A play I wrote, directed and presented to children of first responders and children of deployed military.  The show was free for these children but open to the general public.  We raised the money through various businesses in my community to scholarship tickets for these children.

The show told the story of Santa being kidnapped by a team of bandits known as the "Debbie Downers," who all were not fans of the Christmas season.  Our heroes of the story were superheroes and princesses who came to save Santa.  We also invited our audience members to come and be part of the show, too.  It was a lot of fun to see so many children take part in the fun!  Even some adults participated!

After Santa was saved by the Debbie Downers, Santa told the true story of Christmas by reading from the book of Luke and our same actors acted the story out.  We then concluded the night by providing complimentary cookies and hot chocolate to our patrons.  I was very touched by the number of people who attended our event.

It truly made any "Debbie Downer" leave the evening with a little more Christmas spirit.  I arrived at the event as a writer and left as a writer and a playwright.
